THE RIGHT TO DEVELOPMENT
POWER, HEALTHCARE , ROADS, AND SECURITY ARE RIGHTS, NOT PRIVILEGES
For many Nigerians, human rights are often viewed through the lens of freedom of speech, freedom of movement, or the right to vote. While these are fundamental rights, millions of Nigerians still live without reliable electricity, quality healthcare, safe roads, and adequate security. The question is simple: Can citizens truly enjoy their constitutional freedoms when the basic necessities of life remain out of reach?
At the Porb Justice and Development Initiative (PJDI), we believe that access to essential infrastructure and public services forms part of the right to development. Government has a duty not only to protect lives and property but also to create conditions that allow citizens to live in dignity and reach their full potential.
Reliable electricity powers homes, schools, hospitals, and businesses. Quality healthcare protects life and human dignity. Safe roads connect communities, drive economic growth, and save lives. Effective security allows citizens to live, work, and invest without fear. These are not political favours to be dispensed during election campaigns; they are fundamental obligations of responsible governance.
The true measure of any government is not the number of promises it makes but the quality of public services it delivers. Budgets must translate into completed projects, public funds must be transparently managed, and institutions must remain accountable to the people they serve.
PJDI therefore calls for greater investment in critical infrastructure, stronger public institutions, transparent budget implementation, and measurable accountability in the delivery of essential services. Justice extends beyond the courtroom—it must be reflected in the electricity that powers our homes, the hospitals that save lives, the roads that connect our communities, and the security that protects every citizen.
A nation that guarantees these basic necessities is not merely developing infrastructure; it is protecting human dignity, strengthening democracy, and advancing justice.
