MEDICAL ACCOUNTABILITY
WHY EVERY MEDICAL COMPLAINT DESERVES A FAIR ASSESSMENT
When allegations of medical negligence arise, emotions naturally run high. Families seek answers, patients demand accountability, and healthcare professionals may feel unfairly accused. Yet, one of the greatest mistakes we can make is to reach conclusions before the facts are properly examined.
Not every unfortunate medical outcome is the result of negligence, and not every complaint automatically establishes liability. Equally, genuine cases of negligence or systemic failure may be overlooked if they are not carefully assessed.
This is why the Porb Justice and Development Initiative (PJDI) has made Initial Assessment the second stage of its Medical Accountability Case Management Methodology.
At this stage, PJDI seeks to understand the true nature of a complaint. Does it involve a possible misdiagnosis, delayed treatment, medication error, denial of emergency care, ethical misconduct, or broader institutional and regulatory failures? These are the questions that guide our preliminary review.
The purpose of Initial Assessment is not to determine guilt or innocence. That responsibility belongs to the courts, professional disciplinary bodies, and regulatory institutions. Our role is to determine whether there are sufficient facts to justify further review, institutional engagement, referral, or policy intervention.
This process also protects healthcare professionals. Doctors, nurses, laboratory scientists, pharmacists, and other healthcare workers deserve fairness and due process, just as patients deserve dignity, transparency, and accountability.
At PJDI, we believe that medical accountability is not about assigning blame, it is about establishing the facts, strengthening institutions, improving healthcare delivery, and preventing future harm.
Every complaint deserves to be heard, every allegation deserves a fair assessment, every patient deserves respect, and every healthcare professional deserves fairness and due process.
That is the philosophy behind the Initial Assessment stage of PJDI's Medical Accountability Case Management Methodology and our commitment to building a healthcare system founded on justice, professionalism, and institutional accountability.
